Breaking ECOB News:
color="#97b831">November 23 - EcoBlu Strikes
Sparks with Fire-Resistant Lumber
EcoBlu
Products Inc., the maker of blue-coated lumber that resists mold, termites
and fire, showed off its goods and promoted an alliance with other “green”
home products makers at an open house Monday.
EcoBlu,
which is traded over the counter under the symbol ECOB, hosted an
appearance by TV personality Lisa Ling, a demonstration burning of lumber
with and without the EcoBlu treatment, and the grand opening of its
EcoGreen Exchange.
The
EcoGreen Exchange houses exhibits and brochures from a variety of “green”
building material vendors, designed to bring into one place all the
products and services that go into making an environmentally friendly home.
The permanent exhibition is held at EcoBlu’s headquarters, at 909 W. Vista
Way, reachable at 877-732-6258 or

Ling said
she got in touch with EcoBlu when she and her husband, Paul Song, now on
EcoBlu’s advisory board, were planning an energy-efficient home in Santa
Monica.
“Our
architect found out about it, and we learned it was fire-retardant, mold-
and termite-resistant,” Ling said. “We thought, let’s seriously consider
this, because we live in a state that is so severely plagued by fires. My
husband’s a doctor and he has studied mold-related illness. So to avoid
those things is hugely important for us.”
Steve
Conboy, EcoBlu’s CEO, said he’s been in the housing business for decades,
starting as a carpenter more than 30 years ago in New York, then as a house
framer in Mission Viejo, and from there into the lumber
business.
Conboy said
California’s multibillion-dollar plague of litigation over construction
defects convinced him that the best way to reduce lawsuits was to attack
them at the source.
“We can’t
sustain insurance that way, so we’re trying to get a tax incentive for
protecting lumber,” he said.
Making
lumber last longer reduces the demand on forests, saving trees, Conboy
said.
“We’ve been
pulling from the same forests since World War II. We’re consuming trees
like there’s no tomorrow, and when you protect the lumber there’s no need
to go back and replace it.”
EcoBlu
became a public company this summer after a “reverse merger.” An
already-public company, N8 Concepts Inc., purchased EcoBlu Products and
adopted its name. It has no revenues, the company said in regulatory
filings Monday.
Reverse
mergers are less expensive and quicker than a traditional initial public
stock offering, so they are attractive to smaller companies like
EcoBlu.

Why are EcoBlu Products So Green?
When you
build with EcoBlu products, you are doing your part for a sustainable
environment. Our products are coated with a non-toxic, eco-friendly
solution that has less Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) than a can of soda!
-
EcoBlu Products protect against termites so you will not ever
have to ‘tent’ your home and use harmful chemicals and gases to kill
termites and other insects that are damaging the ozone layer faster than
automotive exhaust. -
When you use EcoBlu products to protect your home, you will
never have to replace any wood from loss to mold or wood rot again! You
will be saving our forests. -
EcoBlu coatings are non-toxic and will not leach into the
ground water. -
EcoBlu products are fire retardant – you will reduce the risk
of losing your home to fire and protect our forests at the same time! The
San Diego wildfires alone consumed over 6,000 truckloads of lumber!
EcoBlu
products reduce consumption by using technology to create a life-long wood
product.
Build Smarter with EcoBlu Products
available for building homes or businesses. Here’s why.
-
Non-wood products are environmentally expensive. The supplies
of ores and petroleum for their production are finite; once gone, they are
gone forever. Wood, on the other hand, is a renewable resource. Non-wood
products require far more energy to manufacture than wood: for example -
nine times as much for a steel stud as for a wood stud. -
Wood is reusable, recyclable and biodegradable. Inorganic
materials not only require excessive energy to produce, but also to recycle
or dispose of when their use has been terminated. -
Growing just one pound of wood in a vigorous younger forest
removes 1.47 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and replaces it
with 1.07 pounds of life-sustaining oxygen. Carbon dioxide accounts for
about half of the world’s greenhouse gases, a contributor to
global-warming.
Mold, Fungus, Rot & Decay
Molds are
fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Estimates range from
tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand species of mold. Molds
grow best in warm, damp, humid conditions, and reproduce by making spores.
Mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions.
Exposure to
molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation,
wheezing, or skin irritation, chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive
lung disease.
- A Brown
University study found a link between depression and household
mold. - 1000
species of mold are common in the U.S. - There are
currently 10,000 mold-related lawsuits pending in the U.S. - Mold-related claims now average $3-$8 billion
annually. - Mold-related claims average $15,000 to $30,000.
- 66% of
builders are concerned about health issues related to mold and nearly 75%
have significant concerns about being sued as a result of mold
issues. - Insurance
that once cost contractors $15,000 now routinely costs $150,000 and does
not cover mold or water damage. - Homeowners
insurance usually excludes or limits claims due to mold-related
damage.
Termites
Termites
populate every state in the United States. Hawaii has the highest
concentration of infestation with 15.1% of the houses being victims.
Georgia tops the list in the continental US, where 5.5% of residential
homes are affected. The national average is 2.3%.
- Homeowners
pay over $2 billion per year to replace wood damaged by fungal decay and
termites. - The
average amount homeowners pays $11,400 to repair a home damaged by Formosan
termites.
Fire
2007 Fires,
Civilian Deaths and Injuries, and Property Loss
- Fires
1,557,500 - Civilian
deaths 3,430 - Civilian
injuries 17,675 - Property
loss $14.6 billion
530,500
fires occurred in structures
414,000
fires, or 78 percent, of all structure fires occurred in residential
properties.
Every 20
seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the
nation.
A fire
occurs in a structure at the rate of one every 59 seconds, and in
particular, a residential fire occurs every 76 seconds.
